Hypnosis: Art or Science?
In my view, hypnosis is surely an art. If hypnosis were a science, it would definitely be taught in universities and medical schools all over the world. In fact, research on the subject would have already put together a definitive truth about how hypnosis works. Due to this research, you would be able to walk on stage with a script and hypnotize an audience. In fact many stage hypnotists have a dream that they can just walk on stage, hypnotize everyone instantly and then wake people up just a few hours later. The hypnotist would then just tell everyone that they had viewed a remarkable show.
Hypnosis, however, is an art. As with any art, the results depend on the artist’s skill and technique. The artist manipulates a given medium to create results. However, you need a natural aptitude to create amazing works.
It is no secret that anyone can paint when it comes down to the basics. Even monkeys have been shown to paint and splatter some oil on a canvas. Both man and animals can grasp the basics. But does that mean that you are doing something well? Of course, it does not.
Hypnosis is different. The medium has got its own mind and can determine its own journey.
When we see a true master artist at work, he or she prepares, plans and gets the basics in order. At this point, the medium can flow. A true artist can follow his or her preparation. However, the artist can also follow the ebb and flow of feedback from the imagination. They are able to respond to their own emotions during the creative process.
If you put paintings under x-ray, you would see different versions that had been followed that lead to the completed painting. But in cold science, people never create on the fly. They just don’t have that sort of flexibility.
Hypnosis is an art and that means that it requires a huge amount of flexibility. In my opinion, it also requires creativity. On the other hand, a scriptnotist uses a script written by someone that they don’t’ even know. This person is clearly a “scriptnotist” not a hypnotist.
After all you will never see a painting in one of the world’s great museums that was created by a paint by numbers set.
