The Amazing Kreskin is a fascinating figure. In the 1960′s, he was one of my heroes for his mesmerizing mentalism. In fact, Kreskin proved in court that hypnosis was only the art of suggestion. He believed that it did not really exist. Of course, Kreskin’s assertion is wrong. Yet, I cannot prove this to get the rewards offered in his new book Kreskin Confidential.

Hypnosis describes interaction between two people. This interaction is a state of mind. Part of Kreskin’s argument is that this is not an altered state. However, this makes no sense. After all, are you in the same state when you are in love as you are when you are angry?

We go through various moods. You may not notice your different moods in the way that you would notice a mountain. However, nevertheless, those moods are there. It is pretty hard not to notice them.

As hypnotists, we deal in emotions and beliefs. In fact, our suggestions are delivered to the root of the mind. We go for the subconscious mind, which is similar to the conscious mind in that it doesn’t exist in any defined way. What I mean by that is that you can’t exactly put your conscious brain in a test tube to see exactly how it functions.

Your emotions don’t really exist. This would mean that you can’t feel them. They would not impact you every day at any given time. Sounds pretty good right?

Take the following idea: there is no such thing as hypnosis. If that is true, then there is also no such thing as suggestion.

Here is the dictionary definition of the word “suggestion”:
a. the process of inducing a thought, sensation, or action in a receptive person without using persuasion and without giving rise to reflection in the recipient.

b. the thought, sensation, or action induced in this way.

This description definitely also applies to hypnosis. But if hypnosis did not exist then this wouldn’t be true! Is this essay making your head hurt? If so, remember that pain is subjective. It will not cause an altered state of concentration, focus or belief. As a result, pain (just like hypnosis) doesn’t exist. You don’t exist either!
